The French rider anticipated the group of favorites, beating Giulio Pavi Degl’Innocenti on the Tuscan finish line. The Belgian, third, gained 5″ on his closest rivals with one stage to go.

For the third time in four stage finishes, France claimed victory in Fivizzano at the Giro della Lunigiana. Johan Blanc triumphed in a lively, attack-filled second half-stage: launching on the final climb to Fivizzano alongside Giulio Pavi Degl’Innocenti and Frigo, he managed to resist the late comeback of the Maglia Verde group.

Degl’Innocenti, second at 1″, finished ahead of the overall leader Seff Van Kerckhove, who, thanks to time bonuses and a small gap at the finish line, gained 5″ on his closest competitors.

On the eve of the final stage, the Belgian leads the standings with 8″ over Friedl and 19″ over Haugetun. The best Italian is Giacomo Rosato, sitting in fourth place.

QUOTES

Johan Blanc: “I’m really happy because this victory comes after a rather complicated period. In the past few days I didn’t feel at my best, but now I feel much better. I knew this finish — my teammates who had raced strongly here before told me about it — and I was aware it suited my characteristics. I’m out of contention for the overall, but I hope I can help my teammates. We are very united and cohesive, and we show it every day”.

Giulio Pavi Degl’Innocenti: “”When we heard that the group was closing in, I gave it everything and launched an attack with 500 meters to go. Waiting would have been useless. I knew this was my last chance in this Giro, so I can be satisfied with the result”.

Seff Van Kerckhove: “It’s great to approach the final day with a bigger advantage. That gives me confidence, but nothing is guaranteed. Tomorrow’s climbs suit me well, and as a team we are very united, so I believe we can try to control the race — which will be crucial on such a demanding day”.
